What are binaural beats?

The binaural beat effect is the result of two slightly different audio waves being heard separately by the left and right ear (such as in a pair of headphones) in a manner that encourages the neurophysiology to generate a specific unified brain wave pattern.

How are binaural beats made?

The human brain has five different types of waves which all are associated with different mind states. If the difference between the two audio waves is less than 40 hertz it will entrain the brain to ease into one of these five synchronized states.

For example: If you have two audio waves, one at 340 hertz and one at 344 hertz, the difference between the waves is 4 hertz. When the brain synchronizes the information between the two pieces of information it will slip into a Delta wave state which oscillates at a frequency of 4 hertz.

What are the benefits?

Hemisphere synchronization (from binaural beats) has been evidenced to positively impact a whole variety of emotional, spiritual and mental states. Each brain wave has a specific area of impact:

Frequency range Name: Usually associated with

> 40 Hz Gamma waves: Higher mental activity, including perception, problem solving, breakthroughs and consciousness

13–40 Hz Beta waves: Active, busy or focused thinking and concentration, arousal, cognition, memory

7–13 Hz Alpha waves: Deep relaxation (while awake), pre-sleep and pre-awake drowsiness

4–7 Hz Theta waves: Dreams, deep meditation, REM sleep, astral projection

< 4 Hz Delta waves: Deep dreamless sleep, loss of body awareness

By choosing specific binaural beat patterns you can modify your experience and feelings as you see fit, and even replicate natural cycles in the human brain (like sleep or concentration). Binaural beats are perfect for augmenting any day to-day experience with either enhances alertness and concentration on one end, or increased relaxation and sleep on the other.

What is the effect of binaural beats on consciousness?

Binaural beats have long been associated with studies in consciousness and consciousness modulation in both clinical and informal studies.

The theta and delta brain waves have especially been linked to meditation and out of body experiences.

Meditation, guided visualization, self empowerment, astral projection, positive re-enforcement, remote viewing and lucid dreaming have all been reported and sought after via the use of binaural technologies.

Are binaural beats habit forming?

No, absolutely not, you may not want to stop listening but there are no physiological mechanisms which could make a human addicted to binaural beats.

Can I listen to binaural beats on my mp3 player/Ipod?

Certainly, just download the mp3 file from our website or from any of the professional binaural beat websites and you can easily load the audio onto a data CD or directly into your portable MP3 player.

Are there any known adverse affects for re-occurring Binaural beat use?

There are no known or clinically evidenced potential negative ramifications associated with occasional or heavy binaural beat utilization.

What is the best time to listen to binaural beats?

That’s really up to you! Use a binaural beat any time of the day that you want a specific state of consciousness. Generally it’s advisable to use Alpha, feta, and delta waves during sleep or meditation and beta and gamma waves during activity or concentration. However, we certainly advise experimenting with what waves work best for you at any given time and during any given activity.

How can they be used for Healing?

There are many uses for binaural beats, one of them being healing. It has been shown that the body is highly capable of healing itself. More and more research shows that there is a link between stress and an unhealthy body. One of the many applications of binaural beats is to deeply relax the body and mind, through this process the mind and body have a chance to heal itself. Binaural beats have also been shown affective with many psychosomatic illness like depression.

How do you make binaural beats?

Again, binaural beats are produced when two tones of slightly different frequencies are played separately in each ear. When the brain comes into contact with two slightly different tones a binaural beat is produced that is the average and difference between the two original tones. For example, a 100 Hz tone and a 110 Hz tone will form a 105 Hz tone pulsating 10 times per second. One may effectively "hear" a binaural beat, with the aid of stereo headphones, by playing two similar tones in each ear.

So by simply altering the tone in each ear a new binaural beat may be heard.

There are many programs that can do this simple tone difference, but the one that I use and I have found most powerful is the open source program SBaGen, which you can find here. For more information on how to use binaural beats see the forum.

What are Binaural Beats used for?

Binaural beats can be used to change the predominant brain wave frequency in a process called brain wave entrainment. It has been said that by changing the predominant brain wave frequency of the brain one may feel any number of effects including:

  • Stress reduction
  • Sleepiness
  • Change in consciousness
  • Feeling of "oneness"
  • Detached Awareness
  • Health improvements
  • Increased memory functioning
  • Increased focus
  • Increased energy flow
  • Increased creativity
  • Increased intuitive knowledge
  • And more...

What do you use binaural beats for?

I primarily use binaural beats to help achieve deeper states of meditation. I have been meditating with binaural beats off and on for the past four years and I have found that when I meditate with binaural beats I am able to go "deeper" in my meditation much faster. Binaural beats do actually work!

Each person is affected by binaural beats differently; some people quickly notice the effects of binaural beats while some take a little longer to feel the effects. Honestly I haven't met a person yet who hasn't been presently surprised at the power of binaural beats.

More Binaural beats:

- This group is famous for the "Digital Drug" preset

- Is probably the oldest and most well known binaural beat company around.

- This group is easily the best known in the world of binaural beats. Even though I find them expensive, many swear by their unique program. You tell me.

Quantum Mind Power
- This group uses isochronic tones over of binaural beats to achieve brain entrainment. Isochronic tones are supposedly more effective. In my experience I have found these tones more effective, though a bit harder to meditate to for longer periods. If you are looking for some quick entrainment, I highly recommend this group.

- Another group that uses isochronic tones over binaural beats. If you need isochronic entrainment then choose one of these two groups as they are the only ones on the market right now that produce entrainment through this technology. I recommend Quantum Mind Power, but many people tell me they like Optimindzation more. Best to try them both and decide yourself. Both groups produce very high quality isochronic tones.
